December 5 , 2003 - Sunday Socializing

Sunday was the last day of Thanksgiving vacation with my family. My brother and his wife, along with their dog, Pulsar, left early at about 10 a.m. because they had eight hours of driving ahead.

But I got up with them and talked with them, had some convenience store coffee. Then I helped them load up the car. As always I was sad to see them go.

After they were gone and my dad went off to church, The Gryphon and I had a chance to catch up on sleep. By the time I was up and about again, Dad was coming back from church.

I told him we had to get a few things at Wal-Mart, and Dad was happy to come along. One of the things we needed was a for-sale sign for my truck. This was my brother's idea. It was already sitting in my dad's parking lot, and he'd already had two offers. We figured a lot of people were likely to see it, and we'd save money on a classified ad.

While there, I also got a travel bag for makeup, toothpaste and such. I'd been using plastic bags, which was serviceable but makes a lot of noise when you try to pull stuff out. This is a problem when other people are in the room sleeping. I found one with a colorful retro design of a redhead against a cloudy sky.

Although I hadn't been planning on it, I also bought two boxes of Christmas cards and an 9-volt battery for the smoke detector in my basement that's been beeping at me.

We got back to Dad's place and I made up the sign and then went to the web site listed on the sign, SharpCar.com, to list it online for free. Then we watched part of High Fidelity on DVD while waiting for my mom to call us about getting together for dinner.

When Mom did call, we agreed to meet at the pizza place where I used to work. They have the best pizza and subs in town. We treated my mom, since she's trying to save money. It was great to hang out with everyone again for awhile, munching on the tasty pizza.

Back at Dad's, we watched the rest of the movie. The Gryphon and I had both seen it, but my dad hadn't.

And then we headed out. The trip back was fairly uneventful. We didn't hit much traffic until Philadelphia. Even that wasn't too bad, with someone along to talk to. Una was sacked out on the back seat. She'll probably sleep for several days, recovering from all the excitement.

You always walk out of Wal-Mart with more than you drove there to get.
