Feb. 28, 2003: Dog Girl

Now that the surge of visitors interested in reading my Michael Jackson essays has slowed, I'm feeling strangely abandoned.

Why do you desert me? MJ better do something freaky soon, to put me back on the map. Now I know how "20/20" feels.

Until then, a little introspection may be in order.

I've always been a sucker for personality tests, astrology and any other system for delving into the why and wherefore of my existence.

A friend recently directed me to a site run by the Kabalarians, which offers name analysis. They had some interesting interpretations, but nothing I hadn't heard before.

Your name of Alyce has created a practical, responsible, stable nature, and you desire to direct the efforts of others rather than to take order or ask permission. You have a determined, self-reliant, capable nature and resent any interference, although in your desire to help you are inclined to become involved in the lives and decisions of other people. You like to make your own decisions and to be the master of your domain. You feel a limitation in your own expression when it is necessary to reach another through tact and understanding. Although you are honest and fair, a directness in speech is a source of much consternation to you, and you often regret what you say. You also have a tendency to worry. It causes you to be too serious, and interferes with happiness and relaxation that comes with naturalness of expression. Health weaknesses centre in the head appearing as headaches, head colds, and eye, teeth, ear, or sinus problems.

I've highlighted the terms which seem to come up again and again in just about any personality assessment I take, whether it is based on astrology, numerology or a personality test. Although I can't claim to be "master of my domain" (Seinfeld fans, feel free to snicker), I have to admit it sounds a lot like me.

Numerology, based on my birth date, claims a similar combination of characteristics, although it adds some interesting things.

Your Life Path Number is SEVEN

If your Life-Path number is SEVEN, depth of thinking and the ability to gain knowledge from most everything will be something you've experienced since an early age. SEVEN is considered the 'spiritual' number and such qualities as intuition will be prominent.

Finally, a reading that combines intellectual with spiritual qualities. I had begun to despair that I was just a boring practical sort.

Those with a SEVEN Life-Path are usually peaceful and affectionate. You may not have many friends as a SEVEN, but the ones you do have will be for life. You're a compassionate and caring friend. As a SEVEN, you will likely be able to sense deception from others quickly and you're not likely to be wrong. A balance between time with others and private time taken to be alone with your thoughts and dreams is essential.

The affectionate qualities mentioned here match up with my Chinese astrology, the Dog (see below). I just had to highlight the portion about how I'm not likely to be wrong. I think I might print this out and carry it around.

It is common for SEVENS to be seen as aloof due to their selective socializing and required time alone. If the truth be told, many SEVENS feel a sense of insecurity. This may be because much of a SEVENS 'reality' is not tangible. You will rely heavily on instincts and intuition. At times this insecurity can lead to pessimism or loneliness. Mood swings are also not uncommon.

I'm not certain if anyone sees me as aloof, but it is true that I keep myself to a rigorous schedule of work for pay and creative projects. My friends are encouraged to call to arrange things ahead of time. Otherwise, I can't promise anything.

I like the mention of relying on instincts and intuition, which I believe is a part of my makeup but doesn't usually get mentioned in personality profiles.

SEVEN personalities are generally reserved and analytical in their assessments of truth. As a SEVEN, you will need to find and draw your own conclusions with evidence before accepting other's notions. Key qualities/words for a SEVEN Life-Path are analysis, understanding, knowledge, awareness, studious and meditating.

Just can't get away from that "analytical" quality. <sigh> And yes, I was voted Most Studious in high school.

Virgo Profile by Astronet

Virgo is an Earth sign, with a need for solid ground and form. Ruled by shape-shifting Mercury, Virgo works hard to stability. This sign analyzes and organizes life; the goal is to build a firm foundation. A good educational background is important to the Virgo. Mutable motivation surfaces in the form of helping, teamwork and cooperation. Humbleness and the ability to work behind the scenes, without complaining, often cause Virgos to miss more opportunities than they should. A dose of self-confidence helps Virgo promote what he or she has to offer. Virgo gets stuck if he or she expresses too much earthy energy. He or she may try too hard. When frustrated, Virgo can get trapped in that notorious perfectionism. Because of the desire for security, Virgo may worry constantly about work: "What if they don't need me anymore?" "What if I make a mistake?" Balance comes with trusting that he or she will be OK and that imperfection is only human!

Yes, it's the infamous Virgo personality profile: analytical, stable, organized, perfectionist, loyal worrier. How I used to hate this profile when I was younger! As someone who sees herself as creative, who sees her life's purpose as creating, to be told that I'm closer in personality to an accountant, it's depressing. But maybe I was just worrying too much...

Chinese Astrology: DOG

The Dog's loyalty and sense of smell make him a sure friend with brilliant intuition. You are very human and warm and people count on that. You advance in life with a logic that is materialistic and you have a high sense of honor. Injustice makes your fur stand on end and you fight to the end against dishonesty and oppression. Those who get in your way should be careful: your bite is deep and your bark thunderous. Willfully incisive, your cynicism is sharp and constantly fed by your pessimistic nature. This lucid realism allows you to rise quickly from your gloom. Nothing surprises you and certainly not worst case scenarios. Your confidence in the goodness of men is relative and you have a tendency to distrust people that you don't know. But if someone conquers your heart, you are a great friend. You love to frolic in the countryside, spend an evening by the fire, and have your nose in a book. A philosopher and discreet, you don't think that you can change society. To protect yourself from disappointment, you choose your close friends with care after having tested them in the smallest details. In this closed universe where affection reigns, you gladly show yourself as a nutty, eccentric companion that is fun to be around. Your fault: As an introverted Dog, you are on the defensive a little too much.

Here we go again: loyal and logical. Of course, this also mentions that I'm "brilliant" and that I'm "a nutty, eccentric companion that is fun to be around." I'm going to have to remember that. And what do you mean, I'm on the defensive too much? Huh?

Of course, all of this jives with perhaps the best personality profile of all time, the quiz to determine "Which Michael Jackson Era Are You?" I am an Off the Wall era Michael Jackson: young, popular and wearing killer sweaters.

As the profile says:

you are the "off the wall / i finally have a fucking solo career" era. finally free of your untalented brothers, you're out and about in a boogielicious world. you're barely 21, living in new york city, rich, and popular. and quincy jones is producing your first solo record. and god, that afro is fucking hot.

And I think that's about as good a profile as you can get.

Moral:
Who wouldn't rather be boogielicious than practical?
