November 29, 2005 - FedEx Adventure

Una and Emma wisely stayed
away from the FedEx office

Friday wasn't too terribly exciting, because everybody went back to work, including myself. The Gryphon and I got lunch together at a place called the Hideaway Cafe that I knew about. I had the clam chowder and then a panini sandwich with a fruit salad, but I could only finish half the sandwich. I had the rest boxed up. It was a nice little break in the routine.

After my afternoon assignment, I had to help The Gryphon with something. He had agreed to write a recommendation for a friend who is applying for the JET program, which gives the opportunity to recent college graduates to teach English in Japan.

But the deadline was Tuesday, and in order to get the recommendation on time, he'd have to overnight it to her.

I told him no problem: we could send it off at the local FedEx place. Unfortunately, when we got there they told us the last pickup had already gone out for the day, because they were on an unusual schedule due to the holidays. They said if we drove up to the main FedEx dispatch center, we could still get it sent out.

The dispatch center was in Montoursville, near Williamsport. According to the woman in the FedEx place, it was near the exit for the Lycoming Mall, but I soon discovered that the way she sent us was not the way I was used to going. We got briefly confused in Williamsport but found our bearings again.

The FedEx place was just off the exit, like she'd said, and there was one FedEx guy there at the counter, happy to assist us. Then, since I thought we were at the same exit I normally took for the mall, I tried to find a vintage clothing store I knew about. No luck; we were on a different exit. It's just that all these highway interchanges look the same.

We got back on the highway and got back just in time to enjoy Thanksgiving leftovers with my dad before I did my evening's work. I did get finished a little earlier that evening, but again, Dad had already gone to bed.

Once more, I fell asleep watching something on cable with The Gryphon. Maybe too much turkey?

More from Thanksgiving 2005:

November 28, 2005 - Turkey Day

November 30, 2005 - Shopping Excursion

December 1, 2005 - Extra Time

Moral:
Even FedEx has different hours on holidays.
