June 21, 2005 - Lipstick and Shrimp

After reading yesterday's Musing, my brother's wife had to relay to me her own crisis related to my sister's upcoming wedding. She had volunteered to make name cards for the tables at the reception, and was printing them out when her printer died. At this point she was just trying to print the back of the cards, which had quotes about love. She decided, instead, to print them on labels and affix them to the back.

I'm coming to the end of the things I need to do to prepare. Today I tried three different stores to find a backup battery for my digital camera, since I've discovered that at big events it tends to give out on me before the memory card is full, even if I start with a full charge.

I also had to get some lipstick and nail polish. Because I'm going for a more natural look with my makeup, I decided to avoid matching the red dress exactly. But I did take with me the removable strap from the dress to compare colors. I chose a color called Aura from the L'Oreal Paris Glam Shine Holograph collection. It's a shimmering lipstick with hints of bronze and coral as well as a little red.

I even found a nail polish to match: a bottle of Revlon Color Illusion in Russet Flicker. Similarly, it's a shimmering color with hints of rust, red and coral. I'll try it on later today, just in case I'm not happy with it, because that will give me a chance to get something else, if needed.

Before setting off on my usual morning dog walk with my dog, Una, I put on some of the lipstick. I liked it, and it was a natural enough color it didn't make me feel self-conscious.

The Gryphon has also been preparing. He bought himself a new shirt to go with his charcoal suit. Since he didn't want white, the salesperson at the Men's Wearhouse recommended a nice blue shirt I think will look sharp on him.

He's definitely wearing a smaller shirt size now, having gone down an inch in his neck, and he's also discovered he's wearing a smaller size in pants. I know because we did a little shopping on Sunday at the Gap, to get him new cargo shorts, khaki pants, jeans and a belt.

Of course, I wasn't surprised, since he's lost more than 20 pounds on Weight Watchers since Thanksgiving. The new clothes definitely fit a lot better, and they look nice.

Now that he has his own LiveJournal, he's been updating it on a semi regular basis. Last night, he said, "I need to update my LiveJournal. What should I write about?"

He picked the wrong time to ask me. I was taking a popsicle break in between assignments, preparing myself for some late night work, and I had nothing constructive to add. Emeril Live was on, the Food Network being one of The Gryphon's favorite stations. Emeril was making dishes involving shrimp, so just to be silly, I said, "How about shrimp butts?" and then collapsed in giggles.

"I'm not going to write about shrimp butts," he said.

"Why? Because they don't exist? You're no fun."

My other suggestions were no more helpful: "Write about your new pants. Write about the town we created while playing Carcassonne." The game is a tile game in which you create medieval cities, and the city in question was the most phallic I'd ever seen. Done completely by accident, I swear.

"That would shock people," he said.

"OK. Well, how about shrimp butts?" He made a face.

Then I had a spark of inspiration. "Write about Batman Begins," I suggested. A quick glance at today's entry reveals he took my advice. On Batman Begins, not shrimp butts.

Moral:
The Gryphon does not find nonexistent crustaceous body parts amusing.
