Let's say
for the sake of argument I have about 15 minutes before a friend shows
up to whisk me and The Gryphon away to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.
In that
case I might be compelled, in lieu of a full-length musing, to give a
capsule review of two Philadelphia area restaurants and one movie theater.

Thinkers
Cafe, in the Bourse, Center City, Fourth Street, Philadelphia: Do not eat
here or you will end up with weird tasting food (such as a grilled salmon
sandwich that, I swear, has "secret sauce" on it just like a Big
Mac). You will get low-grade food poisoning and/or terrible gas that completely
ruins your Friday night plans.
Lee
How Fook's, 219 N. 11th Street, Philadelphia: The atmosphere in this tiny
Chinatown restaurant isn't much to speak about, but my God, the food!
Try the baked salted squid. It's a party in your mouth. We ate there to
honor Warren Zevon, and while we were there I saw a werewolf with a Chinese
menu in his hand. He was going to order a big dish of beef chow mein,
but they don't serve it so he got the baked salted squid instead.
The
Bridge, 40th and Walnut, Philadelphia: This is the coolest movie theater
going, and not just because of the sleek retro look and the absolutely
fab carpets. You get to choose exactly where you're going to sit in the
theater, so after you've bought your tickets you're free to roam, check
out the numerous video screens that broadcast live images from the security
cams (for a voyeuristic kick). And then you can, say, hang out in the
cafe bar, where you can order a rum and coke while waiting for the latest
Johnny Depp flick (in this case Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and
say, when you've finished your drink, "Why is the rum gone?"
(By the way, you must see Pirates of the Caribbean.)
