November 14, 2007 - Fall Photo Shoot

The main index page at AlyceWilson.com was sadly in need of a need head shot, so yesterday afternoon, I took advantage of a crisp fall day to take a new self-portrait. About 3 in the afternoon, I set out with our doggie, Una, my camera and a tripod, and we walked to a small park ablaze with fall foliage.

When we first arrived, the light was at too high of an angle, and I was overexposed in all the photos. I tried moving the camera around to different positions with no luck, so I took a break to attempt some photos with Una. Of course, she kept looking at me instead of the camera, so I only got one I really liked. It's a cute one, though.

I moved the camera again, and since the light had changed, I had better luck, although the camera had trouble figuring out what to focus on. I think I should have tried the landscape setting, which I believe is designed for deep focus and would have kept everything sharp.

Three of the photos were good enough to use. In two of them, I wasn't wearing my glasses.

In the third picture, I was wearing my glasses. The Gryphon liked this one the best, because I had a more natural smile. Also, it was in sharper focus, so I cropped this one and used it on my index page. Here's the full picture.

While she was waiting for me, Una had found a comfortable position in the grass, where she could watch the cars drive by. I took a few more pics of her before we headed home.

Moral:
Use different settings on your camera so you can get a good shot.
