Musings
an Online Journal of Sorts

February 5 , 2004 - NASCAR Dads and Security Moms

I get plenty of creative ideas, and when possible I follow through, often with the help of the Internet.

My most recent such project was starting a shop called Political Candy at CafePress.com.

The project was initially inspired by an idea that came up while joking around with some of The Gryphon's friends over dinner. We were talking politics and I came up with the slogan, "Re-elect Gore."

As I sat there giggling over my own joke, I began to think it would make a terrific bumper sticker. So I developed a design and started an online store to sell them, along with a variety of "Re-elect Gore" shirts.

After I uploaded those shirts, I got to thinking about other possible designs. I wanted to stay in a vaguely political theme, at least for now, given the name of the shop.

Racking my brain for ideas, I thought about today's coveted voting blocks. The so-called "soccer mom" has been replaced with the "NASCAR Dad" and the "Security Mom." You might remember the Democratic candidates attempting to appeal to that demographic by showing up at the racetrack, for example.

Well, I reasoned, since it's such a coveted voting block, it might be a great idea if candidates have a way to identify them when they're not at the racetrack.

Hence, the "NASCAR Dad" T-shirts and bumper stickers.

(NASCAR Dad T-shirts are no longer available due to copyright concerns.)

And "Security Moms" are even tougher for candidates to identify. In fact, I'm not even sure most of them know what they are.

Hence, the "Security Mom" T-shirts and bumper stickers.

I'm hoping to come up with some other designs, soon, whenever inspiration strikes me. If you come up with an idea for a design, e-mail me and if I make it, I'll send you a free bumper sticker featuring your idea.

Moral:
Let the world know what you think: put it on a T-shirt!
