June 25, 2004 - Camera Serendipity

I try to take my digital camera with me when I go into Center City Philadelphia to check my Wild Violet mailbox. Today I was glad I did.

The Gryphon and I just eaten breakfast at the Marathon Grill at 16th and Sansom, where I had the delicious banana French toast. Not as much of a splurge as it sounds, when you consider it's one of the few breakfasts that doesn't come with hash browns.

After we eat, I usually walk The Gryphon to the Greyhound station where he catches the bus to work, but on this occasion the next bus wasn't coming for 45 minutes, so he decided to walk me to the post office where I have the mailbox.

On our way there, we crossed in front of the NBC-10 station, just as a cat-shaped car rolled up to the curb, advertising Meow Mix.

I whipped out my camera, ran across the street, and got some pictures of it as a staffer directed it to the curb.

According to a nifty site I found called the Roadside Gallery, the Meow Mix Mobile weighs 9,850 pounds and has a motorized tongue which does 20 whisker to whisker licks per minute. It's over 19 feet long (nose to tail), over 7 feet wide (whisker to whisker) and over 8 feet tall (from paws to ears).

Just as I'd finished snapping the Meox Mix Mobile, a guy in a Harlem Globetrotters uniform saunters down the street. I took a few pictures on the sly.

Then I crossed back over the street to The Gryphon, who was waiting patiently, still wearing his morning face. He's never fully awake until his second cup of coffee.

I told him, "That'a a Harlem Globetrotter."

He looked at him, quizzically. "How do you know?"

"He's wearing a Harlem Globetrotters uniform." He was also quite tall. But then it occurred to me that it's possible he wasn't a Globetrotter but merely someone promoting their event.

At any rate, I'm glad I brought my camera today.

Moral:
If you carry a camera long enough, something worth photographing happens.
