The four American Idol finalists had to wait through a show packed with performances and fluff before receiving the results, but there's nothing new there.

For the first time in a while, Melinda Doolittle had to wait a little while for her results, as Jordin Sparks was declared safe first.

Knowing that this stage in the competition has frequently given rise to surprises in the past, I worried that Melinda would find herself in the bottom two, but she was declared safe, leaving Blake Lewis and LaKisha Jones in the spotlight.

I honestly had no idea which of them would go home. LaKisha showed potential early in the competition but then made a series of poor song choices that had her fans pining for the "good old days". Last week, she seemed back on top, but this week she reverted to the single-dimension sort of powerhouse singing that judge Simon Cowell says verges on shouting.

On the other hand, Blake is definitely unique. While some might not feel that his vocal abilities surpass the others, he always finds a way to make his performances interesting, adding a contemporary flair to what is often a dry competition. So I wasn't surprised when he was declared safe and LaKisha had to watch her video retrospective. After all, LaKisha is a similar vocalist to the other women, and they have continually outshone her in recent weeks.

Now the big question: can Blake make it into the final two? I wouldn't rule out anything at this point, but I will say that now is the time to throw your support behind your favorite singer. Next week, the finalists will need all the votes they can get.

I've been too busy lately to share many found items, but I'm still picking up plenty of interesting things during my daily dog walks. I'd like to share a hand drawn bookmark I found this month. It features a woman in a long dress, wearing a corsage, with her hair piled high in an updo.

Found bookmark (Click to enlarge)

Underneath her, the artist penciled, "Read About It." And below that, barely discernible: "Everybody is doing it." At first, though, I thought it said, "Reach Above", which is good advice, for the American Idol finalists or for anyone.

Moral:
Reach above.
