March 5, 2008 - Now They're Nine

Jorge Nunez

Last night we learned the last three finalists who will be selected by view vote on American Idol. After 12 contestants performed this week, the three advancing were the girl with the top votes, the guy with the top votes, and the next highest vote winner.

Host Ryan Seacrest kicked off the evening by introducing the six finalists already selected: Alexis Grace, Danny Gokey, Michael Sarver, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. Then he showed a video recapping the journeys of the 12 semifinalists who would hear their news that night

For the group number, they did Katy Perry's "Hot and Cold," the girls starting out at the rail upstairs, then coming down the stairs to join the guys on chairs. The girls danced around as the guys danced on the chairs.

There was some changing up, with some of the guys moving while Scott MacIntyre spun and sat down again. Will they do something like this every time, as long as Scott, who is blind, remains in the competition?

Then came the mandatory recap of the previous night's performances, and Ryan interviewed the contestants. He asked Nathaniel Marshall if the feedback offended him. He said no and also asserted he wouldn't have changed anything. We also learned that Ju'Not had an asthma attack earlier in the evening. L.A. air does not agree with him.

Lil Round was told to stand up, and with little suspense, Ryan told her, "Congratulations." She's through. She sang again.

Next, Ryan had Arianna Afsar, Taylor Vaifanua, Alex Wagner-Trugman, Kendall Beard and Scott MacIntyre stand up, announcing that "one of these people is through to the top 12." Gee, I wonder who? After a commercial break, Ryan picked off Arianna, Taylor, and Alex, then had Kendall and Scott both stand before announcing that Scott was through. Both Kendall and Alex hugged him, and then Ryan guides him to the center stage, telling him that's where he is. "You have a standing ovation here, Scott." Scott reprises "Mandolin Rain."

Nathaniel Marshall and Kristen MacNamara are both asked to stand, their destiny apparently linked since Hollywood week. But this was a bad week for the drama squad. it was a no for both. Felicia Barton and Von Smith are also both asked to stand, at their seats. It's a no for both (video of eliminations).

Ju'Not Joyner and Jorge Nunez are asked to come to center stage. "The person who's going through will find out... right now!" Ryan declares, surprising those who expected the results to come after a commercial break. Jorge is through, and he apparently doesn't read the blogs, because he's shocked. He gives a short speech in Spanish and then sings.

Then, the Wild Card show participants are announced. The judges announce they've picked a handful of people who made an impression on them. Also, everybody sitting on the couch.

The nine who have made it through are paraded through again and sit on the tulip chairs at the side of the stage.

People wait in the Red Room to hear who's going to be called back to perform. The judges take turns announcing their selections, which are: Von Smith, Jasmine Murray, Ricky Braddy, Megan Corkrey (video); Tatiana Del Toro, Matt Giraud, Jesse Langseth, and Anoop Desai (video).

Simon defends the Wild Card system as fair, pointing out that in the past it allowed people like Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson to compete in the finalist round. He asserted that one of these Wild Card contestants could win.

As they announced the Wild Card picks, they gave their reasons for picking them, along with some tips for what they should do in the next round. All eight will compete tonight, and then the judges will select three to advance to the finals. Of course, since six of the nine finalists already selected are male, the judges are unlikely to pick more than one male to advance to the top 12, so the guys better bring their A game!
