Saturday, we attended an Otakon budget meeting, starting to plan the 2006 convention. The meeting itself was mostly crunching numbers. Afterwards, we drifted around trying to find some people to have dinner with and chose to have dinner with some people from the Publications Department. We went to a place called Pacific Rim, which was an Asian fusion restaurant, where I got some sushi and some miso soup. Yum. Sunday, I had some morning assignments and then at 1 we met the woman who will do some occasional dog walking for us. She seemed very friendly and nice, and more importantly, she got along with Una as well as with our cat, Luke. We checked out her references, and they all said glowing things about her, so we'll go forward with her. |

Then we took care of some errands. We had to get ourselves a snow shovel, because there's snow predicted soon and I left my good snow shovel behind for my former upstairs neighbor, who otherwise had none. We also got ourselves some ice melter and a trash can for out back. We next drove to Target and got an inflatable mattress with a battery operated pump so we can use it on occasions when we're staying over but bed space is limited. For example, when we're visiting my relatives over the holidays. For dinner, we ate at an Italian restaurant The Gryphon used to frequent, Italian Village. It was a home cooking sort of place, not gourmet. I had crab cakes with a side of pasta. An elderly man slowly set up to play the accordion, and a nearby mother was getting her son interested. The mother was apparently friends with one of the waitresses, who kept coming over and chatting with her. When the accordion player finally started, the waitress took the son over so he could listen in person. The musician, who had plates full of candies next to his tip basket, encouraged the boy to take a handful of them. The mother smiled but told him he'd have to save some of them for later. We drove
to a nearby theater and saw The Ice
Harvest, which wasn't what we'd expected. We thought it would
be a dark comedy, but while there were humorous moments, it was more like
a film noir and not particularly well done, considering how many good
people were in it. For this, I'd have to blame the script. Or maybe, knowing
Hollywood, the script doctors, who may very well have doctored it into
bland nonsense.
