Musings

I've
found some more artwork in my neighborhood. Last week, while walking my
dog, Una, I found two.
The first was another deer painting, yet far less disturbing than the one of a menacing red deer I rescued from the trash, which my sister is going to paint over. This one is a little brown deer by a forest stream, with the sun coming up. It was on a little canvas, face down in the street with cars running over it. Next to it, also face down in the road, in a bit worse shape, was an abstract flower arrangement which looks more like wall paper than a still life. The flowers are very flat, and some of them could not possibly be contained within the vase. Maybe they were flattened by an elephant foot or something. I found a children's drawing earlier in the week while walking past a Catholic school. It appears to be the picture of a house, but there are no people around. And the only thing inside is a clearly marked TV. Apparently, it's the only piece of furniture this artist found necessary. It's interesting
to compare the pieces of art, contrasting the forest scene of the deer,
the abstract still life and the lonely house filled only with a TV. To
me, it says a lot about the dreams and realities of suburban children.
