The first elimination of the semifinalist round of American Idol took place last night, with two guys and two girls being sent home.

The first to go was Paul Kim, whose poor diction and weird tendency to perform barefoot probably cost him a lot of viewer votes.

The other guy sent home was Rudy Cardenas, who had kicked off the men's night with a version of "Free Ride" suitable for a back alley Vegas club. He is probably now regretting wearing a target on his T-shirt that night.

While the women as a whole were stronger, there were few surprises with who left.

The first woman given her walking papers was mousy Amy Krebs, whose face I had honestly forgotten until she took the stage. This was probably her downfall.

And the second woman was Philly girl Nicole Tranquillo, whose performance was so off-kilter she couldn't even muster her hometown vote.

The bright spot: at least all four of them got their teeth whitened and a new hairstyle.

For the past four days, The Gryphon has been away on a business trip to Phoenix. The house is strangely quiet at night without him, and the animals seem to miss him, too.

Our kitty, Luke, has spent more time than usual in my lap while I work at the computer, and our doggie, Una, waits downstairs every evening for him to come home before eventually sighing and giving up. She hasn't been eating very much, only a little bit when I eat dinner. Normally, she waits until he comes home in the evening before munching down most of her bowl.

I forgot how lonely it was when I was living by myself. The animals are nice companions, but they can't carry on much of a conversation. We're all glad he's returning tonight.

Moral:
Standing out for your vocal talent gets you votes; standing out for bare feet doesn't.
