March 10, 2005 - Final 12

There was a bit of an upset on American Idol last night as far as which 12 contestants became the 12 finalists. But the judges didn't seem that confused.

Ryan Seacrest played with the viewers a bit by bringing out both the "rockers," Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis and making it sound like only one would be advancing. So when he announced Bo Bice was advancing, I assumed that I'd been right about Constantine being eliminated. Then he announced Constantine was also in the top 12.

This left Travis Tucker, Scott Savol and Nikko Smith, two of whom I felt deserved to be in the top 12. As it turned out, Scott made it. I must admit, he has a great voice and I think he has a lot of potential. But I was disappointed that Nikko didn't advance, because he was starting to grow on me.

The women, however, was no big surprise. Once Ryan had told a number of them that they were safe, they were down to Mikalah Gordon, Janay Castine and Amanda Avila. I wasn't surprised that Mikalah made it in, since she has more personality than the other two put together. But there's very little chance that she'll make it all the way.

This year's final 12 seems like a good group. I think many of these singers are a lot stronger than ones who made the top 12 last year. So it will be interesting to see what they do with the material once they start to do themes from week to week. I'm looking forward to it.

I've been fighting off a mild cold for the last two days. I usually resist taking any sort of medication, but it was getting to the point where, mild as it was, it was making it hard to concentrate. My ears were stuffed up. My head was achy and stuffed up. So yesterday, I took some cold medication. It seemed to relieve the symptoms. I know it worked because right about the time it should have been wearing off, I felt miserable again.

I took some more this morning when I woke up at 7 feeling achy. I'm thinking I probably caught something at the Philadelphia Flower Show, where there were so many people who had come in from all over.

The weather is less severe today, and much of the ice has melted off the sidewalk, making it easier to walk without falling.
